A Day Steeped in History
Whether she’s your mum, the mother of your children, your mother-in-law or a mother figure, the mums in our lives are beyond compare. And, as mums ourselves, we’re grateful for that one day dedicated to us!
In New Zealand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year, but the history of this special day is steeped in a past rich in paganism, Christianity and world peace!
The ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals to honour the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele, while in medieval times in the UK, people would return to their mother church on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Following the American Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis organised Mothers’ Friendship Day to promote peace between former Union and Confederate soldiers, and, in 1870, suffragette, Julia Ward Howe, wrote a Mother’s Day Proclamation, calling on mothers to unite and promote world peace. By 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson, officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day…and, inspired by the American tradition, New Zealand followed suit!
