Young children are fascinated by flowers; they love snapping off the beautiful flowerheads in the garden and they love handing them to Mum, expecting her to beam with delight. From the youngest of ages humans are captivated by the natural beauty and variety of flowers, and intuitively know what it means and how good it feels to give flowers to someone special.
The happiness flows both ways.
Getting flowers feels amazing! As our eyes behold an exquisite arrangement of our favourite blooms, a happy dance kicks off in our brains as oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin are released. Just as children seem to understand, those happy feelings also happen for the person giving the flowers. It’s quite possible that the act of giving flowers may even trump the happiness of receiving them.
A deeper connection.
Giving flowers is a generous and thoughtful act, and it makes us look good. Yes, we come off smelling like roses when we give flowers. However, the happiness we feel runs far deeper than simply enjoying the credit. It stems from the deeper connection we feel to our loved one.
Why floristry is a joy and a privilege.
The power of flowers to brighten our days and moods, and make us feel loved and cared for, makes our job at Victoria Florist a real privilege. Leanne Lovell has been a florist for over 40 years and shares a memorable experience. “When I first started as a junior florist, I had a customer who had a stutter. He would regularly come in and order red roses and gypsophila for his girlfriend. Then one day he came in and asked me to write, ‘Will you marry me?’ on the card. I was working in the city and remember walking the flowers to her.” A special assignment that has stuck with Leanne over the years.
Above and beyond
As florists, see people in their happiest and saddest times. Whatever the occasion or circumstance, flowers come from a place of love, and that’s why we always do our absolute best in every situation. As Leanne says, “If a family requests thistles in a casket spray, I’ll go to a paddock and find thistles, or to the beach if they’re after driftwood.”
Ultimately giving flowers is about showing how much you care. Which is why, at Victoria Florists, we always go that extra mile. It’s also why we should always smile when our children decapitate the dahlias and deliver them to us – it’s a compulsive (and beautiful) act of love!
