From Bush to Bouquet: Incorporating NZ Natives into Floristry

NZ natives offer textures and forms you won’t find in introduced species. Think sculptural foliage, earthy tones, and wild, organic shapes. Flowers like manuka and kōwhai, and foliage such as harakeke, form arrangements that feel natural, untamed, and visually striking. What’s more, these plants tell a story of Aotearoa that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to nature. Whether it’s for weddings, events or everyday bouquets, incorporating natives reflects our local landscape and culture, adding authenticity and a strong sense of space.

The Meaning Behind Some of Victoria Florists’ Favourite Native Flowers

Working with native flora isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about storytelling. Here are some of our favourite native flowers and what makes them special:

Kōwhai – A Symbol of Life and Renewal

One of our favourites, the kōwhai has clusters of magnificent yellow bell-shaped blooms. Often referred to as kōwhai-turanga ora (Tree of Life), this gorgeous specimen is symbolic of life and growth.

Pohutukawa – The Spirit of Aotearoa

Aotearoa’s answer to the Christmas tree, the bright splashes of red flowers are irresistible.  Deeply spiritual for Māori, pohutukawa connects the beginning and ending of human life, the red flowers representative of the blood of the warrior, Tāwhaki, who fell to his death when he sought help from heaven to avenge the death of his father.

Mānuka – Texture, Meaning and Resilience

Revered by Māori as a taonga (treasure), mānuka symbolises resilience, healing, protection and cultural heritage. With its delicate flowers and fine foliage, mānuka adds beautiful volume and texture.

Harakeke – Structure and Versatility

Once considered a cornerstone of Māori life, with its fibres used for weaving, its flowers for food, and well-known for its medicinal properties, harakeke is immensely versatile in floristry too. Whether it’s wrapping bouquets, forming loops or weaving shapes, harakeke is a structural keystone.
