The Annual A&P Show | Childhood Memories of ‘80s Floral Fashion
Fashions evolve but when a customer wrote to tell us about her childhood memories of flower arranging, it took us on a fun trip down memory lane!
‘Growing up on a North Canterbury farm, the annual A&P Show was a huge event on the family calendar. There was the year Dad was awarded Champion Fleece for his merino wool by Prince Charles, no less! Less salubrious was the year the pet lamb dragged me around the ring in the Grand Parade, overtaking all the other animals and even the pipers – but I didn’t let go!
Always a chaotic build-up to The Show, my sisters and I entered everything, from handwriting to cake baking and, of course, flower arranging. This was the mid-80’s when the rules of floristry were strictly adhered to. I can’t remember the rules. I’m not sure I ever knew them. But between my mother and my grandmother, I followed them! Year after year, my floral sand saucer was a winning entry. And my arrangements always placed. Stiffly geometrical, they reflected pure 80’s style. In fact, if they’d been clothes, they were dressed to impress – shoulder pads, day-glo brights and spikes to die for!
Possibly even more tragic than 80’s fashion, this was the only time of year our home was full of flowers. But now, thanks to Victoria Florists, I always have a bunch in my home. And even better, I can pop in and choose a bouquet that suits my mood, from bright and zesty to soft and calming, formally posh or cottage cute. But not a shoulder pad or a perm in sight!’ – Pip

The Resurgence of Dried Flowers
Dried flowers have been blowing up in social media for good reason. They’re nothing new – but just like flared jeans, they’ve made a comeback!
Ultra-long lasting and the gift that doesn’t stop giving, dried flowers are low maintenance, great value for money, versatile and, quite simply, stunning!
At Victoria Florists, we’ve got a fabulous range, from readymade bouquets to loose stems. For the on-trend young man or woman, we even make bespoke dried corsages for school formals, an Insta-worthy memory that will last well beyond the ball!

Foliage Forever
When you want a long-term solution for foliage in the office or the home, you can’t go past a pot plant. We stock a lovely range of plants, including Peace Lilies. Not only are they rated by NASA as one of the best plants for improving air quality, they’re also reasonably drought-tolerant, meaning if you forget about them, they’ll forgive you!
Or how about one of our Orchids? Spiritually, they represent the search for truth, the courage to be different, and the ability to appreciate the beauty of life – not a bad set of values, whether you’re spiritual or not! Typically, our orchids are in bloom when they leave the store. However, when they stop flowering, a little love will see them alive, thriving and blooming again in no time:
- Remove spent flowers.
- Keep them in bright, indirect light.
- Dry out between waterings.
- If you re-pot them, use orchid-specific soil.
- Fertilize during the growing season.
