Everyone has their own theory about how to meet your perfect match. Well, it’s the same with how to keep flowers fresh for longer. We look at the most popular theories and how you can get the most value out of your bouquets.
#1 Change the water entirely every other day
Yes, this is absolutely a good idea if you want to maintain the life of your freshly cut flowers. Be sure to replace the water instead of just topping up the water. The original water builds up bacteria which can clog up the stems. And fun fact: did you know that adding food colouring to your water will change the colour of your flowers?!
#2 Clean cut, clean water, clean vessel
Yes, this theory is tried and true! Make sure you cut a centimetre or two off the stems of your flowers with sharp cutters before putting them into a thoroughly clean vase with fresh, clean water. This will give your flowers an excellent start. A bonus tip from Leanne, owner of Victoria Florists, is to make sure that there is no foliage submerged under the water. “Cut off any leaves that are below the water line in your vase. That way, you’ll enjoy your flowers for at least ten days.”
#3 Keep your flowers away from heat and bright light
Some people swear by keeping their flowers in the fridge! But once you’ve been gifted flowers, we don’t really see the point of keeping them tucked away in a cold, dark bedroom for no one to enjoy. Yes, by all means, keep them away from direct sunlight, but replacing the water and removing the oldest stems will do wonders for keeping your flowers looking fresh for longer.
