A Symbol of Love and Unity

Today’s wedding flowers are usually a consolidation of the wedding theme, the style and colours carried through into bouquets and table arrangements. However, for many people, they remain symbolic of memories from the past and hope for the future. Victoria Florists understand the importance of creating meaningful floral designs that carry such personal significance.

It hasn’t always been this way, though. In ancient Roman times, both brides and grooms clutched small posies or wore garlands symbolic of fertility and fidelity. Aromatic flowers were thought to ward off evil spirits and ensure a prosperous future.

Later, during Medieval times, flowers took on a practical purpose. In an era of annual bathing, flowers were not only used to mask the sickening stench of body odour, but they also marked the beginning of the bridal toss. Touching the bride or, better still, running off with a piece of her dress, was considered good luck. Tossing her bouquet offered the bride and groom a moment of distraction to safely depart!

It wasn’t until Elizabethan times that wedding flowers began to take on an aesthetic purpose when fashionable brides wore complementary flowers in their hair and small posies were created as favours for guests. By Victorian times, the wedding bouquet as we know it today was established, although there was less focus on style and more on romantic sentiments communicated through floral choice. The mother-of-the-bride found herself altering the positioning of her corsage though. Derived from the French words ‘bouquet de corsage’, or ‘bouquet of the bodice’, corsages were originally pinned centrally at the top of dresses. However, as Victorian necklines plunged, so too did the flowers! Corsages were moved to the shoulder where suitors could pin them to a woman without offending her sensibilities.

Today, wedding flowers continue to be just as important, albeit less about guarding from evil and concealing stench! Instead, they’re a thoughtfully curated collection of colours, flowers and shapes that are a beautiful and heartfelt extension of the wedding itself. At our Victoria florists Christchurch, we understand how to combine tradition with modern flair, ensuring your wedding flowers are as stunning as they are meaningful.
