A timeline of gifting flowers

Hundreds of years ago

The history of giving flowers goes back to ancient times. People would offer them to the gods and goddesses as a sign of respect. In fact, the word “flower” comes from the Old English word “flowra”, which means “to blossom”.

The Middle Ages

The Ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Egyptians were thought to have used flowers as a way of communication in their stories and legends. Flowers were of great significance and great value.

The Victorian era

When the English visited Turkey, they started to learn that there is a language dedicated to flowers. Floriography gives meaning to each flower. It developed as a form of communication at a time when it was not polite, appropriate or proper etiquette for someone to fully express their emotions. For example, a red rose meant “I love you”, while a yellow rose meant “I am sorry”.

Modern times

Nowadays, we are used to giving flowers no matter what the occasion. They are still given to mark important occasions, but they are also offered as a simple gesture of appreciation or as a way to show someone that you are thinking of them. And now we’re suggesting giving flowers this Father’s Day to break the stereotypes that flowers are just for ladies. Whatever the reason, giving flowers is a lovely way to make someone feel special.
